WoW Forever Leatherworking, 271 New Patterns and the Leveling to 300
7 min read
Leatherworking got more new content than any other profession in Forever. The beta client holds 512 recipes and 271 of them are new, seventy more than Blacksmithing received. It also carries 82 Merchant’s Favor patterns, the largest book of any tradeskill, covering leather and mail across seven named set lines.
Before anything else, one warning. The skill ranges moved. Most Classic recipes turn grey about 25 points earlier in Forever, so a Classic Era levelling guide will stall you somewhere in the middle and you will not understand why
The camp object everyone wants

Leatherworking makes the Camp Tent, and it is the single best object in the camping system.
It grants rested experience up to 5% of a level to everyone sitting at the fire. Nothing blocks it. Every stat object in the game is exclusive with some class buff, so the Herbalist’s candle does nothing next to a Mage and the Alchemist’s well does nothing next to a Paladin. The Tent always lands.
Skill 20, five Light Leather, and it is the reason every group wants a Leatherworker at the fire

Where to train Leatherworking
Apprentice has no level requirement in Forever, so a fresh character can learn it immediately.
Capital trainers. Kamari in Orgrimmar, Dan Golthas in Undercity, Mak in Thunder Bluff. Randal Worth in Stormwind, Gretta Finespindle in Ironforge, Darianna in Darnassus.
Starting zones. Chaw Stronghide in Bloodhoof Village, Shelene Rhobart southeast of Brill, Adele Fielder by Crystal Lake northeast of Goldshire, Nadyia Maneweaver near the Darnassus road in Teldrassil. Durotar and Dun Morogh have no trainer, so Orcs, Trolls, Dwarves and Gnomes go to the capital.
The ranks need finding separately:
- Journeyman at skill 50 and level 10. Karolek, Arthur Moore or Tarn for the Horde. Simon Tanner, Fimble Finespindle or Faldron for the Alliance
- Expert at skill 125 and level 20, for 50 silver. Una in Thunder Bluff or Telonis in Darnassus, and nobody else
- Artisan at skill 200 and level 35. Hahrana Ironhide in Camp Mojache, Feralas, or Drakk Stonehand in Aerie Peak, The Hinterlands
Expert and Artisan are both single-trainer ranks, so plan the trip rather than discovering it at the cap
Levelling from 1 to 225
Two branches exist in the middle and the cheaper one depends on your auction house. Compare the hide price against the leather price before you start.
| Skill | Craft | Amount | Materials |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 30 | Light Leather | 33 | 100 Ruined Leather Scraps |
| 30 to 45 | Light Armor Kit | 20 | 20 Light Leather |
| 45 to 55 | Embossed Leather Gloves | 10 | 30 Light Leather, 20 Coarse Thread |
| 55 to 80 | Fine Leather Belt | 25 | 150 Light Leather, 50 Coarse Thread |
| 80 to 100 | Cured Medium Hide | 25 | 25 Medium Hide, 25 Salt |
| 100 to 125 | Dark Leather Belt | 25 | 25 Fine Leather Belt, 25 Cured Medium Hide, 50 Fine Thread, 25 Gray Dye |
| 125 to 130 | Heavy Leather | 7 | 35 Medium Leather |
| 130 to 150 | Hillman’s Leather Gloves | 21 | 294 Medium Leather, 84 Fine Thread |
| 150 to 165 | Barbaric Leggings | 15 | 150 Heavy Leather, 30 Fine Thread, 15 Moss Agate |
| 160 to 175 | Dusky Bracers | 10 | 160 Heavy Leather, 10 Black Dye, 20 Silken Thread |
| 175 to 180 | Thick Armor Kit | 5 | 25 Thick Leather, 5 Silken Thread |
| 180 to 205 | Nightscape Headband | 26 | 130 Thick Leather, 52 Silken Thread |
| 205 to 225 | Nightscape Pants | 20 | 280 Thick Leather, 80 Silken Thread |
The Fine Leather Belt step matters. Keep all 25 of them. They are a reagent for the Dark Leather Belts at 100 and buying them back costs more than the thread did.
Thick Leather is a problem in the beta. It only drops from level 40 mobs and the beta caps characters at 20, rising to 30. Until that lifts, Heavy Leather routes through Barbaric Harness and Dusky Belt are the only way through 175 to 200.
Past 225 nobody has a tested route. The client data points at Thick Leather Ammo Pouch, Wicked Leather Gauntlets, Chimeric Gloves, Frostsaber Boots and Heavy Scorpid Helm, and the skill shift means those ranges need checking once the cap rises

The named set lines

Six leather lines cover skill 60 to 110: Brawler’s, Defender’s, Stormrider’s, Totemic, Trapper’s and Wisdom’s. Each runs belt, boots, tunic, gloves, leggings and hood, so one line gears a character head to foot.
Seven more cover skill 185 to 235, and most come in leather and mail both: Prowler’s, Skulker’s, Stalker’s, Skirmisher’s, Skycaller’s, Warden’s and Mender’s. The mail versions make this a Hunter and Shaman profession as much as a Rogue and Druid one.
All of it comes from Merchant’s Favor. No trainer teaches any of it
Where to buy the patterns
Supply crates found in the world get handed in at a trade camp for Merchant’s Favor. The Leatherworking quartermaster sells 81 patterns plus the Certification from skill 60.
Alliance buy from Daniel Stitchsong at Three Corners, Redridge Mountains, /way 10.0 72.4. Horde buy from Pawani outside the Crossroads in the Barrens, /way 49.6 29.6.
| Cost | Skill | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 30 Favor | 60 to 110 | The six leather lines, every slot |
| 60 Favor | 185 to 210 | Gloves and shoulders across seven lines, leather and mail, plus the Forceful Thick Armor Kit |
| 90 Favor | 220 to 235 | Bracers, belts and boots in the same lines, plus the Mystic Rugged Armor Kit |
| 1,000 Favor | 300 | The Leatherworking Certification and the Leatherworker title, account-wide |

The Legacy perks that matter
Four sit on this profession and two of them apply before you craft anything.
Working Overtime. Professions tree, five ranks, open from the start. Up to 20% more chance of a skill increase from any tradeskill. Take it first, because it pays across every profession on the character rather than just this one.
Performance Bonus. Professions tree, three ranks, needs 5 points spent in the tree and a rank in Bountiful Harvest. Up to a 15% chance of double Merchant’s Favor per crate. With 81 patterns behind Favor, this one pays for itself faster on Leatherworking than anywhere else.
Dedicated Study. Professions tree, one rank, needs 10 points in the tree and a rank in Bartering. Adds 1 skill to your lowest tradeskill on a 23 hour cooldown. Slow, but free.
Bountiful Harvest is not a Leatherworking perk, though you need a rank in it to unlock Performance Bonus. Five ranks, open from the start, and it raises scarce material finds from Skinning, which is the profession you should be pairing with anyway.
Skill milestones pay separately. Reaching 150, 225 and 300 for the first time on the account each award 1 Legacy Point
What Leatherworking brings to camp
| Tier | Object | Skill | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Camp Tent | 20 | Rested experience to 5% of a level, blocked by nothing |
| 2 | Tanning Rack | 140 | Makes certain reagents, keeps the Tent bonus |
| 3 | Sewing Machine | 300 | Required for the most advanced patterns, keeps the Tent bonus |
The Tanning Rack is worth reaching for a second reason. Some advanced patterns cannot be crafted without one, so it works as a portable workstation as well as a buff

Is Leatherworking worth it in WoW Forever?
For anyone in leather or mail it is the deepest profession in the game right now.
It gears four classes out of one book. It holds more new patterns than any other tradeskill. It makes the one camp object that never goes to waste. And with no WoW Token in Forever, crafted armour sells into a market where every buyer farmed their own gold.
Pair it with Skinning and most of the cost disappears, since you skin what you were killing anyway. Without Skinning the middle of the route gets expensive fast
What to do first
- Take Skinning alongside it. Leather is most of the bill
- Take Working Overtime before your first craft. Up to 20% more skill-ups across everything
- Make Camp Tents from skill 1. Five Light Leather each and you end up holding the best camp object in the game
- Keep your 25 Fine Leather Belts. They are a reagent at skill 100
- Ignore Classic Era guides. Recipes grey out roughly 25 points earlier here
- Plan the Expert and Artisan trips. Una or Telonis at 125, Hahrana Ironhide or Drakk Stonehand at 200
- Start collecting supply crates at 60. Every named set is Favor-only
Leatherworking is the most material-hungry profession after Blacksmithing. KingBoost levels WoW Forever professions from launch day so the patterns are ready before the raids open on December 9
