Azta'rec Nemesis Delve Guide: How to Beat Venomfall Deeps in WoW Midnight Season 2
10 min read
Azta'rec is the Season 2 Nemesis boss, he lives in Venomfall Deeps on the Coiled Isle, and he is the reason the Apophic Soul Crusher is one of the rarest mounts in Midnight. He is also the only Delve encounter in the game that asks you to play a memory game while a second copy of the boss tries to kill you.
This guide covers where to find him, how to unlock both difficulties, every ability in his rotation and how the Sermon of Ula'tek intermission actually works. It also covers the Valeera setup that carries the fight and every reward attached to putting him down.

What Azta'rec is and what he drops

Every Delve season gets a Nemesis. Season 1 had Nullaeus. Season 2 has Azta'rec, a venom-soaked serpent construct tied to the Curse of Ula'tek storyline, and he sits behind his own dedicated lair inside Venomfall Deeps rather than at the end of a normal Delve route.
He runs on two difficulties labelled "?" and "??". The "?" version wants roughly 290 item level to be comfortable. The "??" version is where every meaningful reward lives, including the Apophic Soul Crusher mount, and it is a real solo challenge rather than a tuning inconvenience.
One detail worth knowing before you decide whether to bother: your first Azta'rec kill pays 30 Hero Mistcrest, and those appear to sit outside your seasonal crest cap. Even players who have no interest in the mount tend to take that on principle.
You can also run into Azta'rec by accident. He shows up at random inside Tier 8 and higher Delves, and you can pull him deliberately with the Scalebound Herald's Flute while you are inside one. That version is a decent way to learn his rotation without committing to a lair attempt.
Venomfall Deeps location

The entrance sits on the northern side of the Coiled Isle, in the upper part of the Serpent's Tail area, tucked inside one of the serpent structures.
/way #2512 51.22 30.27 Venomfall Deeps
If you land slightly off, the entrance is within a few yards of that pin. Look for the snake architecture rather than a standard Delve marker.
Unlocking Tier ? and Tier ??

Both difficulties are gated behind normal Delve clears, and both requirements include the "with lives remaining" clause that catches people out.
- Tier ? opens after you clear a Tier 7 Delve with at least one life left during Season 2
- Tier ?? opens after you clear a Tier 10 Delve with at least one life left during Season 2
Burning all your revives on a scrappy Tier 10 clear technically finishes the Delve and does nothing for your Nemesis unlock. If you are prepping specifically for the mount, run that Tier 10 clean and run it early, because you do not want to be scrambling for the unlock on the day you finally have the gear for the boss.
Setup before you pull

Azta'rec punishes bad preparation harder than bad reflexes. Get this part right and the fight becomes a pattern you execute rather than a puzzle you survive.
Item level
Around 290 is the practical floor for "?". For "??" you want considerably more, because the Echo mechanic effectively doubles the incoming damage during every intermission and there is no amount of skill that lets an undergeared character eat a Soul Extinction. If your character is short, the fastest routes are Tier 8 Bountiful clears for the Vault and Mistcrest upgrades from your weekly Delve route.
Valeera's role
This is the single biggest decision in your loadout and it flips depending on what you play.
- Playing DPS or Tank? Set Valeera to Healer. She dispels Void Toxin off you automatically and adds sustain against his melee, which hits far harder than it looks. The trade is that Soul Extinction becomes your problem and you have to interrupt every single cast yourself
- Playing a Healer? Set Valeera to DPS so she handles the interrupts on Soul Extinction. You then own the Void Toxin dispels, which is the easier half of the deal if your kit has a reliable dispel
Icy Veins leans Healer Valeera even for many DPS players because of the melee damage, and that matches what most successful solo kills look like. If you have both a strong self heal and a dispel, DPS Valeera and her extra interrupt is defensible.
Curios and poison
The community has converged on the same two curios:
- Combat Curio: Corrosive Bilespear. Straight damage, and damage is what shortens the Echo problem. Ouroboric Curse looks tempting on paper but its effect wants you to take damage you probably will not survive taking
- Utility Curio: Soul-Cracking Dreamcatcher. Because you are interrupting Azta'rec constantly, this stays close to permanently active, and at Rank 3 or higher that is a 30% damage increase. The debuff lands on the boss, so Valeera's interrupts keep it rolling even when you are healing
Poison is where the two big guide sites disagree, so pick based on your weak point. Method recommends Frosthearth Venom for the 20% attack and cast speed reduction, which stretches out the window you have to react to Soul Extinction and gives healers more room before a Void Toxin dispel. Icy Veins prefers Phantasmal Spore Toxin or Soulthirst Venom. If you are dying to mechanics, take the slow. If you are running out of time on the Echo, take the throughput.
Corrosive Codex
The Corrosive Codex from the Vaults of Atal'Utek functions inside Delves, including this one, and most people forget to set it. Accursed Poison is the standard pick, paired with Virulent Mucus, Lithic Plumage or Plague of Corrosion depending on whether you need damage or survivability.
Addons
Deadly Boss Mods handles the cast timers. The one that matters more is SnakeSays, a purpose-built addon for the intermission that draws a mock arena you can click or keybind to log which quadrant was clean each round. It converts the memory phase from a feat of concentration into note-taking. Nobody is going to think less of you for using it.
World markers
Drop a world marker in each of the four quadrants before you engage. During the sermon you will be recalling "square, then triangle, then moon" instead of "the one near the pillar, I think". Skip the green marker if your poison visuals are already green, which they are.
Azta'rec's abilities

Outside the intermissions he cycles the same list in the same order, every time. That predictability is your biggest advantage.
- Noxious Bile. A frontal poison cone aimed at you. Heavy Nature damage on its own, and it leaves poison pools where it lands. Sidestep it once he commits, and make sure it lands somewhere you do not need later
- Void Toxin. A magic debuff that ticks for heavy Shadow damage and cuts your damage output. It is interruptible, but since it leaves a DoT behind, dispelling is the cleaner answer. Healer Valeera does this for you
- Soul Extinction. An interruptible cast that kills you outright if it finishes. There is no version of this fight where you let one through. Every kill plan is built around always having an interrupt ready for it
- Venom Storm. Slow waves of poison that travel across the arena. Easy to see and easy to dodge, which is exactly why you do not want the room full of Noxious Bile pools when they arrive
- Serpent's Strike. Tank specialisations only. Heavy Physical damage, so keep a defensive banked for it
The rotation runs Noxious Bile > Void Toxin > Soul Extinction > Venom Storm > Serpent's Strike (tank only) and repeats until he hits an intermission threshold.
Main phase strategy

Pull him toward the edge of the arena and keep him there. Noxious Bile fires at you, so your position dictates where the poison pools land, and every pool you leave in the middle of the room is a pool sitting in a quadrant you may need to stand in later. Fighting on the rim keeps the centre clean.
From there it is maintenance. Interrupt or dispel depending on your Valeera setup, dodge the waves and hold a defensive for Serpent's Strike if you are tanking. Keep half an eye on his health bar as it approaches the thresholds. The main phase is not what kills people.
The Sermon of Ula'tek intermission

At 90%, 60% and 30% health, Azta'rec walks to the centre of the arena, gains a 99% damage reduction and begins channelling Sermon of Ula'tek. The room is already split into four quadrants by chains, which is the layout the entire mechanic runs on.
Here is how a sermon works:
- He floods three quadrants with poison and leaves one clean. The telegraph shows you which is which
- You get a couple of seconds to reach the clean quadrant before the poison detonates for lethal Nature damage
- That repeats several times in a row, each round with a different safe quadrant
- Then he replays the exact same sequence in the same order with no telegraph at all. You have to walk it from memory
The number of rounds grows with each intermission:
| Intermission | Tier ? | Tier ?? |
| 90% | 3 | 5 |
| 60% | 4 | 6 |
| 30% | 5 | 7 |
Stand near the boss in the centre while the sermon runs. You are equidistant from all four quadrants there, which turns every movement into a short dash rather than a sprint across the room with a two second timer.
Once the blind repeat is done, his shield drops and the main phase resumes.
The memory is the whole fight. Seven safe zones in exact order, executed under pressure at 30% health with an Echo alive, is the wall that most players never get past. Log the sequence with SnakeSays or say the marker names out loud as they appear. Do not trust yourself to just remember it, because on the seventh round you will not.
Tier ?? changes and the Echo

Mechanically, "??" is the same fight. Two things change and both land during the sermon.
- Everything hits harder. More boss health, more damage per ability, less margin on every mistake
- The Echo of Azta'rec. At the start of every intermission he summons a copy of himself. The Echo does not have a large health pool, but it uses his full ability list at full lethality, including Soul Extinction. So while you are running a memory pattern between quadrants, something else is casting a one-shot at you
How to handle it:
- Kill it fast. Save offensive cooldowns for the Echo specifically, since the rest of the fight is fairly static and gains little from them
- Crowd control the Echo's Soul Extinction rather than hard-interrupting it. This is the best tip in either source guide. Azta'rec himself is immune to CC, so every interrupt you spend on the Echo is one you might not have when the real boss casts. Stuns, roots and incapacitates all buy the same time and cost you nothing
- Split the jobs with Valeera. If she is a Healer, you are interrupting the Echo. If she is DPS, you are dispelling Void Toxin off yourself while she handles the interrupt
Bloodlust timing splits opinion. Icy Veins argues for the first sermon at 90%, because that is where a long cooldown gets full value on the first Echo and the sermons only get longer from there. Method suggests holding it for the final intermission on "??" to burn the last Echo down. Both work. The 90% version is safer for players who expect to be tight on damage, and the 30% version is stronger if you are confident and want the kill window at the end.

- Letting a Soul Extinction through. Almost always because the interrupt was spent on the Echo a few seconds earlier. CC the Echo instead
- Poison pools in the middle. Fighting in the centre during the main phase leaves quadrants contaminated before the sermon even starts
- Losing count on the blind repeat. Round five onwards is where memory goes. Use the addon
- Undergeared for "??". The Echo effectively doubles the damage output during intermissions. Item level is not optional at that difficulty
- Missing the unlock. Clearing Tier 10 without lives remaining does not open Tier ??, and plenty of people discover this the week they wanted to attempt the mount
Rewards and achievements

| Reward | How you get it |
| My Venomous Nemesis and the Apophic Patagia cloak | Defeat Azta'rec in his lair on any difficulty before the next Delve season |
| Corrosive Victory toy | Complete the seasonal quest Fangs for the Memories |
| Purging the Poison and the Poisonous title | Defeat Azta'rec on Tier ?? |
| Let Me Solo Him: Azta'rec and the Apophic Soul Crusher mount | Defeat Azta'rec on Tier ?? with no other players in your party |
| Fabled Let Me Solo Him: Azta'rec and the Fabled Vanquisher of Azta'rec title | Same solo kill, completed during the first week of Season 2 |
| 30 Hero Mistcrest | First kill on either difficulty |
Two notes on the solo achievements. Valeera does not count as another player, so bringing her is fine and expected. And the Apophic Soul Crusher goes away when Season 2 ends, which puts a hard clock on it that the rest of the Delve collection does not have.

FAQ
CAN YOU KILL AZTA'REC IN A GROUP?
Yes, and the group kill still earns My Venomous Nemesis, Purging the Poison and the Poisonous title on Tier ??. What it does not earn is the mount. Let Me Solo Him: Azta'rec checks that nobody else is in your party, so a friend tagging along costs you the Apophic Soul Crusher
WHAT ITEM LEVEL DO I NEED FOR TIER ???
Method puts the recommendation for "?" at 290 and "??" sits meaningfully above that. Rather than chasing one number, look at whether you survive a Soul Extinction cast slipping through and whether you can kill an Echo before a sermon finishes. If either answer is no, gear up first
IS THE FABLED TITLE STILL AVAILABLE?
No. Fabled Vanquisher of Azta'rec required the solo kill inside the opening week of Season 2. Once that window closed, the achievement locked permanently. The regular Let Me Solo Him and the mount stay available for the rest of the season
WHAT'S THE BEST CLASS FOR SOLOING HIM?
Anything with a reliable interrupt, a dispel and a defensive worth using on Serpent's Strike. Self-sustain matters more than raw damage, since the fight rewards staying alive through three sermons rather than racing a timer. Tanks have the easiest survival profile and the slowest Echo kills, which is a fair trade
