It depends on your item level. Normal mode is for 1600+ and gives you Purple Elixirs. These are great for starters. Hard mode is for level 1620+ and gives you Gold Elixirs. Legendary ones are much stronger and are required for the best endgame builds. If your level is high enough, Hard mode is always the better choice for your character's power.
You only get rewards for the gates you actually clear. If you skip Gates 1-3 and only do Gate 4, you will miss out on the Gold and loot from those earlier bosses. That's why we recommend you to choose a Full Raid Run - it is the most efficient way to grow your character's power every week.
