You need a piece of gear that is already of Prototype quality. Once you have that, we can begin leveling its Augment. The item must also be at Level 40 and, for the conversion, at Expertise Level 30, though this is typically handled before the item becomes Prototype.

This depends entirely on your build. For high-damage weapon builds, Echo (double bullet damage) or Paradox (magazine refill) are top choices. For survivability, Quantum gives a chance for temporary damage immunity. For skill builds, Anomaly (skill healing) and Synesthesia (skill cooldown reduction on bullet hits) are must-haves.
