TBC Anniversary Black Temple Guide: All 9 Bosses, Loot and Warglaives
10 min read
Illidan Stormrage sits at the end of nine bosses, and the two swords he guards are why people still talk about this raid. The Warglaives of Azzinoth are the headline, but Black Temple is the loot engine of Phase 3 whatever you play. Three of your five Tier 6 slots drop here. So do the Ashtongue Deathsworn class trinkets, a long list of best-in-slot weapons and the Shadow Resistance neck you need for Mother Shahraz.
This one walks every fight, the mechanics that actually cost pugs the raid, and the gear worth pushing loot council for. For the attunement and the rest of the phase, start with our Phase 3 overview.

What Black Temple drops

Black Temple Attunement

Anniversary TBC Black Temple Raid

1-70 Custom Leveling WoW Anniversary Classic TBC
Three reward tracks pull raiders back to the Temple week after week.
- Tier 6, three of five slots. Black Temple holds the Shoulder, Legs and Chest tokens. Mother Shahraz drops the shoulders, the Illidari Council drops the legs and Illidan drops the chest. The other two slots, Head and Hands, come from Mount Hyjal. Tokens come in three class families, Conqueror for Paladin, Priest and Warlock, Protector for Warrior, Hunter and Shaman and Vanquisher for Rogue, Mage and Druid. Turn them in to Tydormu at the entrance to Hyjal Summit for the finished piece
- The Warglaives. Illidan drops the main-hand and off-hand glaive on separate rolls, so most rogues and warriors need several kills before both halves line up. Everything Illidan drops sits at a higher item level than the rest of the raid, which is the other reason his loot table matters most
- The Ashtongue Deathsworn trinket. You reach Friendly with this faction just by finishing the attunement, and killing trash inside the Temple pushes you to Exalted over a few weeks. At Exalted the quartermaster sells a best-in-slot trinket for every role. More on those at the bottom
High Warlord Naj'entus

The gatekeeper, and an honest gear check rather than a puzzle. Naj'entus impales players on Impaling Spines and shields himself, and someone has to grab a loose spine off the ground and throw it at him to strip the shield and free the trapped player. Miss that and the raid falls behind on damage fast.
Worth rolling on: Halberd of Desolation is a strong two-hand polearm for physical damage, The Maelstrom's Fury is a fast main-hand dagger rogues will want and Rising Tide covers a one-hand axe slot.

Phase 3 All Raids Bundle
A two-part patchwerk. Supremus tank-and-spanks with molten fire patches on the ground, then switches to a Gaze phase where he fixates a random player and chases them at speed while everyone kites. No resistance gear needed, just clean movement.
Worth rolling on: The Brutalizer, one of the best one-hand axes in the game for physical DPS. Hunters chase the Legionkiller crossbow, healers can grab the Syphon of the Nathrezim and casters get a neck upgrade from the Choker of Endless Nightmares.
Shade of Akama

An add-control fight more than a boss fight. You defend Akama while he channels against waves of Ashtongue attackers, and the raid lives or dies on how cleanly your assigned players lock down the Defenders and Spiritbinders. Get the adds under control and the Shade itself folds quickly.
Worth rolling on: loot leans support. Wristbands of Divine Influence are a healer bracer that stays best-in-slot deep into the expansion. Tanks pick up the Praetorian's Legguards and Grips of Silent Justice.
Teron Gorefiend

The raid's first real individual execution test. Teron marks players with Shadow of Death, and when a marked player dies they become a ghost who has to destroy their own Vengeful Spirit constructs before the constructs reach the raid. One person fumbling the ghost phase can snowball into a wipe, so this fight sorts the raid that reads its debuffs from the raid that does not.
Worth rolling on: casters want the Robe of the Shadow Council, physical DPS eye the Soul Cleaver two-hander and healers can grab the Cowl of Benevolence.
Gurtogg Bloodboil

Planned damage control. Gurtogg throws Bloodboil that the furthest players from him have to soak in rotation, and periodically he casts Fel Rage on a random player, dumping all his threat and damage onto them for a stretch while the healers keep that one person alive through enormous hits. Assign your soak groups before the pull and it is smooth. Improvise it and it is not.
Worth rolling on: the Unstoppable Aggressor's Ring is a tanking staple, the Messenger of Fate is a sharp off-hand dagger and the Shadowmoon Insignia gives casters a spell-hit trinket.

Three essences, back to back, with no break to drink between them. The Essence of Suffering hits the tank hard and fixates, the Essence of Desire mirrors damage back and drains mana, and the Essence of Anger is a straight burn that feeds on your rage and aura. It is a fight about mana discipline and burst windows, since running dry mid-essence loses the pull.
Worth rolling on: casters and healers clean up here. The Crown of Empowered Fate is a plate caster and healer helm, Grips of Damnation suit Balance Druids and the Torch of the Damned is a two-hand caster mace.
Mother Shahraz

This is the wall. Shahraz rains Shadow damage on the entire raid for the whole fight, so everyone who is not a tank needs a Shadow Resistance set to survive without dropping their damage to nothing. On top of that, Fatal Attraction links three random players and forces them to sprint apart before the debuff detonates. Get your resistance sorted, drill the Fatal Attraction spread and she goes down. Skip the prep and you will wipe here for a week.
She drops the Tier 6 shoulder tokens for all three class families. Physical DPS want the Heartshatter Breastplate and Blade of Savagery, casters take the Leggings of Devastation and healers grab Nadina's Pendant of Purity.
For the full breakdown of how much Shadow Resistance you actually need and how to build the set cheaply, see our Phase 3 overview, or skip the material hunt with Shadow Resistance gear.
The Illidari Council

Four bosses up at once, sharing a health pool, each with their own kit. Gathios tanks and buffs, Malande heals and casts, Zerevor throws spells that need interrupting and Veras poisons and vanishes. You need simultaneous interrupt, dispel and tank assignments holding across all four, because the moment one of them runs loose the whole encounter unravels.
The Council drops the Tier 6 leg tokens, and the item everyone wants is Madness of the Betrayer, a top-tier melee and hunter trinket. Plate DPS take the Helm of the Illidari Shatterer and agility users the Forest Prowler's Helm.

Five phases and the payoff for the whole raid. You tank the two Flames of Azzinoth on his glaives in phase two, survive a demon-form phase where a warlock often tanks in a Shadow Resistance set, handle Shadow Demons that trap players and dodge Shadow Prison. Raw damage will not save a raid that skips the phase transitions.
The loot table is the best in the instance. The two Warglaives of Azzinoth sit at the top, but Illidan also drops Bulwark of Azzinoth, a tank shield that holds up for the rest of TBC. Cursed Vision of Sargeras is a leather DPS helm that rogues, feral druids and enhancement shaman all fight over. Casters get two of the best trinkets in the game in The Skull of Gul'dan and Memento of Tyrande, plus the Zhar'doom, Greatstaff of the Devourer. Healers chase the Crystal Spire of Karabor, tanks the Shard of Azzinoth dagger and Faceplate of the Impenetrable. And the Tier 6 chest tokens drop here too.
Ashtongue Deathsworn trinkets

Grind to Exalted with the Ashtongue Deathsworn, which happens naturally from Temple trash over a few clears, and the quartermaster sells your class its own trinket. These are among the strongest trinkets of the phase for the specs they serve:
- Ashtongue Talisman of Equilibrium for Druids
- Ashtongue Talisman of Acumen for damage casters
- Ashtongue Talisman of Lethality for Rogues
- Ashtongue Talisman of Swiftness for Hunters
- Ashtongue Talisman of Insight for healers
- Ashtongue Talisman of Zeal for Retribution and Enhancement
- Ashtongue Talisman of Vision for Warlocks
- Ashtongue Talisman of Shadows for Shadow Priests
- Ashtongue Talisman of Valor for Warriors
Want it cleared without the headache

Black Temple rewards preparation over gear, and the two places raids stall are the Mother Shahraz resistance wall and the Illidari Council coordination check. If your group keeps breaking on those, or you just want the Warglaives chased reset after reset without organising 24 other people, our Black Temple carry teams run full clears and the Warglaive farm.
FAQ
HOW MANY BOSSES ARE IN BLACK TEMPLE?
Nine: High Warlord Naj'entus, Supremus, Shade of Akama, Teron Gorefiend, Gurtogg Bloodboil, Reliquary of Souls, Mother Shahraz, the Illidari Council and Illidan Stormrage
WHICH TIER 6 SLOTS DROP IN BLACK TEMPLE?
Shoulders from Mother Shahraz, Legs from the Illidari Council and Chest from Illidan Stormrage. The Head and Hands tokens come from Mount Hyjal. You turn tokens in to Tydormu at the Hyjal Summit entrance
HOW DO YOU GET THE WARGLAIVES OF AZZINOTH?
Both glaives drop from Illidan Stormrage, the final boss, on separate rolls. Most players need multiple Illidan kills before the main-hand and off-hand both drop, since each is an independent chance
HOW MUCH SHADOW RESISTANCE DO YOU NEED FOR MOTHER SHAHRAZ?
Enough to survive her constant raid-wide Shadow damage without gutting your damage stats. Non-tanks build a crafted Shadow Resistance set, slot the Medallion of Karabor from the attunement chain and carry Shadow Protection Potions
