The Best Karazhan Attunement Guide - TBC Anniversary Edition 2026
20 min read
Karazhan, or Kara - is one of World of Warcraft's most iconic and beloved raids. This 10-man dungeon stands out as a fan favorite not just because it's your entry point into TBC endgame raiding, but because of its rich atmosphere, challenging boss mechanics and legendary loot. From the opera event's rotating encounters, to the coveted Fiery Warhorse's Reins mount drop from Attumen, Karazhan offers some of the most memorable raid experiences in WoW history.
What Is Karazhan Attunement in TBC Anniversary?
Karazhan attunement is a multi-stage questline that grants you The Master's Key, the permanent item required to unlock Karazhan's main entrance. Without this key, you must rely on another attuned player to open the door every time your raid group zones in—which becomes a major hassle in pickup groups or late-night raids.
The attunement chain involves three major components:
- Story Questline – Starting with Archmage Alturus in Deadwind Pass, progressing through Dalaran and ending with Khadgar in Shattrath
- Three Key Fragments – Collected from Shadow Labyrinth, Steamvault and Arcatraz
- Final Activation – Completing The Black Morass in Caverns of Time to forge The Master's Key
The attunement questline is mandatory for your first character, but TBC Anniversary introduces account-wide attunements, meaning you only need to complete it once per account—then all your alts can jump straight into raiding. This guide walks you through every step of the attunement process, including all the QOL improvements that make it significantly easier than the original 2007 and Classic WoW experiences, so you can get to the fun parts faster.
TBC Anniversary QOL Changes
Before diving into the step-by-step guide, here's what TBC Anniversary changed to make Karazhan attunement faster and more alt-friendly:
Account-Wide Raid Attunements
- Your first character completes the full questline, once finished, all characters on your Battle.net account can enter Karazhan.
Account-Wide Heroic Dungeon Keys
- Your main needs Revered reputation with Outland factions for Heroic access. Once Revered, you receive a Bind on Battle.net Account key that can be mailed to alts
- Alts only need Friendly reputation (not Revered) to use Heroic keys
Post-Nerf Raid and Dungeon Tuning
- All TBC dungeons and raids launch in their post-nerf state
- Boss health, damage, and mechanics already tuned down
- Shadow Labyrinth, Arcatraz and Black Morass are significantly easier than original TBC
Faster Leveling and Better Loot
- XP required from 20-60 reduced by 15%
- Quest XP rewards increased by 20-50% starting at level 25
- All Classic dungeon boss drops upgraded to blue (rare) quality
- Makes Pre-Patch leveling and gearing faster
Dual Spec Available Day 1
- Costs 50 gold to unlock (one-time fee)
- Swap between tank/DPS or heal/DPS out of combat
- Tanks and healers find dungeon groups 10x faster—use Dual Spec to speed up attunement
Minimum Requirements to Start
Before beginning the Karazhan attunement questline, make sure you have:- Level 68+ (all attunement quests require level 68 to accept)
- Access to Outland dungeons (you'll run Shadow Labyrinth, Steamvault, and Arcatraz)
- Flying mount recommended for Arcatraz entrance (or have teammates summon you)
Time investment: 4-6 hours total for first character (0 hours for alts)
Complete Karazhan Attunement Quest Order
Here's the full sequence of quests you'll complete during the attunement process:
- Arcane Disturbances – Investigate the Pond entrance under Karazhan
- Restless Activity – Collect ghost essences in the Well entrance under Karazhan
- Contact from Dalaran – Travel to Alterac Mountains
- Khadgar – Speak with Khadgar in Shattrath City
- Entry Into Karazhan – Begin the Key Fragment hunt
- First Key Fragment – Shadow Labyrinth (after defeating Murmur)
- The Second and Third Fragments – Steamvault + Arcatraz
- The Master's Touch – Complete The Black Morass in Caverns of Time
- Return to Khadgar – Receive The Master's Key
How to Start Karazhan Attunement
The Karazhan attunement questline always begins in Deadwind Pass at the tower's entrance. Travel to Deadwind Pass, approach Karazhan's main gate and speak with Archmage Alturus standing outside. He will offer two quests that begin the attunement chain.
Stage 1: Deadwind Pass Opening (Story Introduction)
This stage introduces the lore behind Karazhan and unlocks the questline that leads to the Key Fragment hunt.
Step 1: Meet Archmage Alturus
Location: Outside Karazhan's main gate, Deadwind Pass (47.0, 75.6)
Quests: Arcane Disturbances + Restless Activity
Archmage Alturus stands directly outside Karazhan's entrance. Speak with him to receive two quests:
- Arcane Disturbances – Use the Violet Scrying Crystal at the underground Pond
- Restless Activity – Collect 10 Ghostly Essences from spectral mobs in the underground Well
Both quests take place in the Master's Cellar beneath Karazhan, accessed through two separate entrances nearby.
Step 2: Enter the Master's Cellar (Two Entrances)
The Master's Cellar is split into two wings, each with its own entrance:
Underground Well Entrance: 40.8, 73.2 (southwest of Karazhan)
Underground Pond Entrance: 40.0, 70.2 (west of Karazhan)
Objectives:
- Enter the Pond entrance and use the Violet Scrying Crystal on the water (completes Arcane Disturbances)
- Enter the Well entrance and kill spectral mobs to collect 10 Ghostly Essences (completes Restless Activity)
Tip: The Well side has more mobs and is slightly larger. The Pond side is smaller and contains only the scrying point. Both must be completed before returning to Alturus.
Step 3: Contact from Dalaran
Location: Alterac Mountains
Quest Giver: Archmage Alturus → Archmage Cedric
After completing both cellar quests, return to Archmage Alturus outside Karazhan. He will give you a follow up quest: Contact from Dalaran
This quest sends you to Archmage Cedric in the ruins of Dalaran (Alterac Mountains). Travel there and speak with Cedric to advance the storyline. Cedric will give you the next quest: Khadgar
Step 4: Travel to Shattrath City
Location: Terrace of Light, Shattrath City (54.0, 44.0)
Quest Giver: Khadgar
Travel to Shattrath City in Outland (use your hearthstone or fly). Khadgar is located in the center of the Terrace of Light (the main central platform).
Speak with Khadgar to turn in the Khadgar quest. He will then give you: Entry Into Karazhan
Stage 2: Collecting the Three Key Fragments (Dungeon Phase)
This is the longest and most demanding part of the attunement. You'll collect three Key Fragments from three different Outland dungeons:
- First Key Fragment – Shadow Labyrinth
- Second Key Fragment – Steamvault
- Third Key Fragment – Arcatraz
Each fragment is guarded by a Fragment Guardian that spawns when you open an Arcane Container in the dungeon.
Fragment #1: Shadow Labyrinth (Auchindoun)
Dungeon: Shadow Labyrinth (Normal difficulty)
Location: Auchindoun, Terokkar Forest (39.0, 73.0)
Prerequisite (see below): Shadow Labyrinth Key (obtained from Sethekk Halls)
Before you can enter Shadow Labyrinth, you need the Shadow Labyrinth Key.
How to get it:
- Enter Sethekk Halls (Normal difficulty, same location as Shadow Lab)
- Defeat Ikiss (final boss) and loot The Talon King's Coffer for the Shadow Labyrinth Key
Alternative: If another player in your group has the key, they can open the door for everyone.
Note: Sethekk Halls boss loot is upgraded to blue quality, making this run rewarding even before attunement.
Collect Fragment #1
Steps:
- Enter Shadow Labyrinth using the Shadow Labyrinth Key
- Clear through the dungeon to the final boss, Murmur
- Defeat Murmur
- After Murmur dies, an Arcane Container spawns behind him (left side of the boss platform, coordinates 12.0, 38.0)
- Open the container to summon the First Fragment Guardian
- Defeat the guardian and loot the First Key Fragment
- Return to Khadgar in Shattrath and turn in Entry Into Karazhan
Khadgar will then give you: The Second and Third Fragments
Note: Shadow Labyrinth is significantly easier in post-nerf state. Boss health and damage are reduced, making this a smoother experience than original TBC.
Fragment #2: Steamvault (Coilfang Reservoir)
Dungeon: Steamvault (Normal difficulty)
Location: Coilfang Reservoir, Zangarmarsh (50.0, 33.0)
Prerequisite: None, you can just walk right in!
Fragment #2 is the easiest and fastest to obtain because it requires no boss kills and is located near the dungeon entrance.
Steps:
- 1) Enter Steamvault and move toward the first boss room (Hydromancer Thespia)
- 2) Before entering the boss room, jump into the water pool on the right side
- 3) Swim down to find the Arcane Container underwater (coordinates 59.0, 86.0)
- 4) Open the container to summon the Second Fragment Guardian
- 5) Defeat the guardian and loot the Second Key Fragment
- Done!
Alternative Route: Some groups prefer to clear to the first boss for loot, then grab the fragment on the way out. Either approach works.
Note: This is the fastest fragment by far. You can grab it solo or with a small group in under 10 minutes.
Fragment #3: Arcatraz (Tempest Keep)
Dungeon: Arcatraz (Normal difficulty)
Location: Tempest Keep, Netherstorm (74.0, 57.0)
Prerequisite: Arcatraz Key (obtained from Botanica + Mechanar chain)
Before you can enter Arcatraz, you need the Arcatraz Key.
How to get it:
Quest Chain: How to Break Into the Arcatraz (Part 1 + Part 2)
Starting Location: Shattrath City
Steps:
- 1) Accept "How to Break Into the Arcatraz" from:
- Spymaster Thalodien (Aldor) at Aldor Rise, Shattrath (64.0, 42.0), OR
- Field Commander Mahfuun (Scryer) at Scryer's Tier, Shattrath (62.0, 58.0)
- 2) Travel to Tempest Keep in Netherstorm
- 3) Enter The Botanica on Normal difficulty
- 4) Clear to the final boss, Warp Splinter, defeat him and loot The Warp Splicer
- 5) Return to Shattrath and turn in the quest
- 6) Accept the follow-up: "How to Break Into the Arcatraz (Part 2)"
- 7) Enter The Mechanar on Normal difficulty
- 8) Defeat the final boss, Pathaleon the Calculator and loot A Heap of Ethereals
- 9) Return to Shattrath and turn in the quest
- 10) Receive the Arcatraz Key
Alternative: If another player in your group has the Arcatraz Key, they can open the door for everyone. You can also use a Warlock summon to bypass the entrance if you don't have the key.
Collect Fragment #3Note: Both Botanica and Mechanar have upgraded loot tables and are straightforward runs with the post-nerf tuning.
Steps:
- Enter Arcatraz using the Arcatraz Key (or have a keyed player open the door)
- Clear to the first boss, Zereketh the Unbound and defeat him
- Move into the room filled with voidwalkers (just past the first boss)
- Find the Arcane Container in the corner of the voidwalker room (coordinates 43.0, 25.0)
- Open the container to summon the Third Fragment Guardian
- Defeat the guardian and loot the Third Key Fragment
- Return to Khadgar in Shattrath
Note: Arcatraz is the longest fragment run, but the post-nerf state makes it significantly easier than original TBC. Plan for 30-45 minutes with a competent group.
Return to Khadgar
Once you have all three Key Fragments, return to Khadgar in Shattrath City. He will combine the fragments into a Restored Apprentice's Key and give you the final quest: The Master's Touch
This quest sends you to the Caverns of Time to complete the attunement.
Stage 3: Forging The Master's Key (Final Attunement)
The final stage of Karazhan attunement takes place in the Caverns of Time in Tanaris. You'll complete two dungeons:
- Old Hillsbrad Foothills (one-time unlock for Caverns of Time access)
- The Black Morass (final attunement step)
Step 1: Unlock Caverns of Time (Old Hillsbrad Foothills)
Before you can enter The Black Morass, you must complete a one-time unlock quest in Old Hillsbrad Foothills.
Location: Caverns of Time entrance, Tanaris (64.0, 49.0)
Steps:
- 1) Travel to the Caverns of Time entrance in Tanaris (southeast of Gadgetzan)
- 2) Speak with Andormu standing outside the entrance
- 3) Accept "The Caverns of Time"
- 4) Enter the Caverns of Time and speak with Steward of Time at the central platform
- 5) Accept "Old Hillsbrad"
- 6) Enter Old Hillsbrad Foothills on Normal difficulty
- 7) Complete the Thrall escort event (protect Thrall through Durnholde Keep)
- 8) Defeat Lieutenant Drake (final boss)
- 9) Return to Steward of Time and turn in the quest
- 10) Accept "The Opening of the Dark Portal"
Once you complete Old Hillsbrad, you permanently unlock access to The Black Morass for all characters on your account.
Note: The Thrall escort event is straightforward with post-nerf tuning. Just protect Thrall through three waves of enemies and defeat the final boss.
Step 2: The Black Morass (Final Key Activation)
Dungeon: The Black Morass (Normal difficulty)
Location: Caverns of Time, Tanaris (accessed after Old Hillsbrad)
Objective: Protect Medivh and defeat all portal waves
The Black Morass is a wave-based dungeon where your group must defend Medivh while he opens the Dark Portal.
Steps:
- Enter The Black Morass
- Speak with Medivh at the entrance to start the event
- Defend Medivh for 18 waves of temporal dragons and rift lords
- Kill priority: Rift Lords > Rift Keepers > Chrono Lords (mini-bosses)
- Close portals as soon as they spawn
- Keep Medivh's health topped off at all times
- After wave 18, defeat Aeonus (final boss)
- Turn in The Master's Touch to Medivh
- Receive the quest "Return to Khadgar"
- Return to Khadgar in Shattrath City
- Turn in the quest and receive The Master's Key
Congratulations! Your account is now permanently attuned to Karazhan.
Note: Post-nerf tuning reduces enemy health and damage significantly. With a competent group, Black Morass is much easier than the original 2007 version.
You're Done! Enter Karazhan
Once you receive The Master's Key, you can now enter Karazhan and unlock the gate for your raid group.
Steps:
- Travel to Deadwind Pass (Karazhan entrance, 47.0, 75.6)
- Zone into Karazhan with a 10-man raid group
- Use The Master's Key to unlock the main gate
- Begin your first Karazhan raid lockout
Raid Lockout: Karazhan resets weekly (Tuesday NA, Wednesday EU). You can clear it once per week per character.
Fast Track for Alts (Account-Wide Attunement)
Once your main character completes the Karazhan attunement questline and receives The Master's Key, every character on your Battle.net account can enter Karazhan right away.
Steps for Alts:
- Hit level 70
- Join a raid group
- Travel to Karazhan entrance in Deadwind Pass
- Zone in and start raiding
This is the biggest quality-of-life improvement in TBC Anniversary and saves 4-6 hours per alt.
Tips for Faster Karazhan Attunement
1. Unlock Arcatraz Access First
Arcatraz is the biggest blocker for most players. Without the Arcatraz Key, you can't collect Fragment #3, which halts your progress entirely. So, complete the Botanica + Mechanar chain early (before starting Shadow Lab and Steamvault). This removes the biggest bottleneck.
2. Run All Dungeons in One Session
Form a group and run Shadow Labyrinth → Steamvault → Arcatraz back-to-back. Staying with the same group eliminates LFG queue times and can save 1-2 hours.
3. Use Dual Spec to Find Groups Faster
Tanks and healers find dungeon groups 10x faster than DPS. If you're a hybrid class (Paladin, Druid, Shaman, Priest), unlock Dual Spec (50g) and queue as tank or healer for instant invites.
4. Complete Old Hillsbrad Early
You need Old Hillsbrad completed before you can enter Black Morass. Knock this out while leveling 68-70 or immediately after hitting 70 to avoid delays later.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Forgetting to Loot the Fragment Guardians
After defeating each Fragment Guardian, you must loot the fragment from the guardian's corpse. If you forget, you'll have to re-run the dungeon.
2. Not Having the Shadow Labyrinth or Arcatraz Key
Shadow Labyrinth and Arcatraz both require keys. If you show up without them, you can't enter.
Solution: Complete Sethekk Halls (for Shadow Lab Key) and Botanica + Mechanar (for Arcatraz Key) before attempting attunement.
Alternative: Group with players who already have the keys—they can open the doors for everyone.
3. Letting Medivh Die in Black Morass
If Medivh dies during The Black Morass, you fail the event and must restart the entire dungeon.
Solution: Assign a dedicated healer to watch Medivh's health bar. Keep him topped off at all times, especially during mini-boss waves (6, 12, 18).
4. Skipping Old Hillsbrad
You cannot enter The Black Morass until you've completed Old Hillsbrad at least once.
Solution: Run Old Hillsbrad before attempting Black Morass. This is a one-time unlock per account.
Good luck in Karazhan, and may Attumen finally drop that mount!

FAQ
Q: Do I need to complete Karazhan attunement on every character?
A: No. Only your first character needs to complete the full questline. Once finished, Karazhan unlocks account-wide for all characters on your Battle.net account.
Q: Can I enter Karazhan before level 70?
A: No. Karazhan requires level 70 to zone in. You can start the attunement quests at level 68, but you won't be able to enter the raid until 70.
Q: Do I need Heroic dungeon keys to complete attunement?
A: No. All attunement dungeons (Shadow Lab, Steamvault, Arcatraz, Black Morass) are run on Normal difficulty. Heroic keys are only required for Heroic dungeons, not attunement.
Q: How long does the full attunement take?
A: 4-6 hours total for your first character (including all prerequisite dungeons). Alts take 0 hours thanks to account-wide unlocks.
Q: What happens if I fail The Black Morass?
A: If Medivh dies or you fail to close portals in time, the event resets and you must restart the entire dungeon from the beginning.
Q: Can I skip parts of the attunement?
A: No. Every step is required: Deadwind Pass quests → Three Key Fragments → The Black Morass → The Master's Key. There are no shortcuts.
Q: Can I buy a Karazhan attunement boost?
A: Yes. KingBoost offers professional Karazhan Attunement services where our team completes the entire questline for you. Get attuned in 4-6 hours while you do literally anything else.
